about us
Proemio – Prologue in old Medieval Spanish, stands for kick- start or first page. This is indeed the beginning of the winery’s story. In 2001, Marcelo Bocardo, third generation winemaker and the descendant of a traditional Italian immigrant family founded Proemio with the goal of producing high quality wines that truly represent his ancestors’ passion for viticulture and a legacy for the generations to come.
Marcelo Bocardo could be described as a new wave winemaker of Argentinian wines, avoiding over extraction and heavy use of oak, focusing on expression of the terroir (i.e. Uco Valley, Pedriel-Luján de Cuyo and Maipú).

WINEMAKER AND OWNER
Marcelo Eduardo Bocardo
My beginning on this industry starts when I was 12. Three generations in viticulture. My grandfather and father owned just a couple of hectares of grapes in Junín, Mendoza. Till then my father and grandpa has taught me to grown the grapes slowly and understand each ones character. At those times Argentine wines were totally different and we used to sell those grapes to big wineries doing table wines, which was a peaty for such profound care we gave to them.
I watched in silence since I was little — that made an impact on my character, on my senses, and in my life. Winemaking is a way of life that has as its premise contact with nature and love for the work.
After many years working for other companies in Chile and Argentina and lot of effort from my family and me I could start doing My wines, now is the moment to put my name on them “Marcelo Bocardo”. Now I run a really boutique winery with a 4 guys operation (super small) , where we all share the same passion and know the secret of each drop in every bottle. I do not only believe in Malbec, we love our Cabs, Petit Verdot, Syrah-Grenache co-fermentation and Blends. My beloved place for wines is Russell-Maipú vineyard, some kms away from the first oenological school from South America founded by the Salesian monks. And the first region doing high end wines from Mendoza more than 100 years ago.
But the most important topic is to able to translate the grapes into wines that define a geographical identity. Since my very first vintage I have always been looking for varietal purity and elegance, avoiding over extraction and heavy use of oak, focusing on expression of the terroir (i.e. Uco Valley, Pedriel-Luján de Cuyo and Maipú). We achieve great results with low yielding, premium zone vines that show varietal purity with elegance and harmony. Fruit character and terroir expression is my goal, always keeping freshness and modern style.
So the evolution is a permanent process.
It has been a long path to get here with a lot of sacrifice from all my family through generations And a fourth generation of Bocardo will come!!!!
Marcelo Bocardo is married to Patricia Stirpa and has two children, Antonella and Nicolás.
